Snack Attack

As we were getting ready this morning, it became eerily quiet. I noticed the pole walking around smiling. I asked him what was in his mouth, and he had the nerve to giggle and keep walking. I asked him again, and he started to run. In a split second I had my finger hooked in his mouth, pulling out a......

Frito?

Steve was snacking on frito's last night, and I guess one fell on the floor under the counter. I have no idea how the pole sniffed it out before Ursa.
What a strange kid.

Night Routine - new approach

The pole has always been a pretty good sleeper. However, a few weeks ago he randomly started freaking out at bedtime. We tried the tough love approach of leaving him in his crib to cry for 1 minute, then 2 minutes, up to 5 minutes. This method was horrible and not a good fit for us. Steve and I felt incredibly guilty, and the pole became increasingly freaked out and worked up.

After a few nights of this, we switched approaches and it was been awesome. Someone at work actually mentioned that they did this with their son, and still do to this day (he is ~7). Once we put the pole in his crib and tuck him in, I sit down in his chair with a blanket and relax for a few minutes until he falls asleep. The first night took ~40 minutes for him to unwind, but he did so without screaming/crying (as he did when we tried the other approach). The second night took around 30 minutes, and by night #3, we were down to ~10 minutes. 2 weeks later, he is falling alseep within a few minutes of hitting the crib. We continue to stay in the room for ~5 minutes after we put him down...honestly its a nice way to relax from the day.

Just something to keep in mind....you don't always have to do things the "tough love" way in order for them to work.

15 month checkup

Today was the pole's 15 month check up. Everything looks good. His measurements came in off the charts again, 34lbs and 34 inches. I think he was ~34 inches at the 1yr appt...the Dr said the nurse probably screwed up one of the measurements. Oh well. He's still in a 3T, although the waist is a little looser now.

He has moved from "drunken walking" to a sprint. Tonight the pole and Ursa ran around the upstairs loop about 50+ times. They both finally sat down on the rug and took a breather.

After his Dr appt, we got to check out an ambulance and fire truck (parked outside for some reason). The fireman was nice enough to open the fire truck doors and let us climb in to get a closer look. It was fun to see, although it was incredibly smelly. (Someone in the firehouse needs to invest in better deodorant.)

On the way home we stopped at TJ Max to check out the toys. I've been looking for a kid friendly power drill for the pole, and of all places, I found one at TJ. Its the "Bob the Builder" drill, and the pole loves it. Once we got home, Steve and the pole spent the next hour pretending to drill anything in their path (including Ursa).

Family Dinner

Tonight we decided to brave it. With a little planning, Steve and I were able to sit down with the pole and eat dinner. We had beef ravioli's with tomato sauce, salad and bread. The pole loved the ravioli's, and also enjoyed his usual large helping of 10+ strawberries. Ursa was excited to clean up the leftovers (excluding the salad of course).

Tomorrow we are attempting family dinner #2 with oven bbq chicken (marinating in the fridge right now), mac-n-cheese and green beans. Hopefully we can pull it off.

Ear Update

Late post....

After the pole got the tubes, his ears were dry for a month or so. All of the sudden, they started draining a dark nasty fluid. The Dr said that a small blob of wax probably blocked his right ear (the worse ear). After a few weeks, the remaining 10-20% of infected fluid built up enough pressure to blow out the ear wax, and so the heavy draining began. Gross

2 weeks ago we brought the pole back to his ear specialist for the 2 month post op follow up. The Dr determined that the pole still had some "gunk" stuck behind the tube in his right ear. When he initially got the tubes, the Dr did let us know that he was only able to suck ~80-90% of the stuff out of his right ear b/c it was so swollen. After another quick suctioning in the hospital (which the pole was NOT happy about), we were on our way. The pole has just finished a week cycle of ear drops, and everything looks great.

Anyways, everything is looking good and hopefully this is it!!!

I'm glad to see you too little man!

Today when I picked the pole up from school, he waddled over and gave me a huge kiss. I love this age!

New School

We made the decision to move the pole to a new school. It was sad to say goodbye to his old friends, but we felt like it was time for a change. His old school had a high teacher turn around rate, and to be honest, there were some health/cleanliness issues that were totally unacceptable to us.

Yesterday was the pole's first day. We love the new school and hope the pole would learn to love it as well. We picked him up around 5:15 and he was a playing with play dough with his friends, although a little sad. The teacher let us know that they were in the dance room having a dance party for the last 45 minutes. When it was time to leave, the pole was a little ticked off.

In case you didn't know, the pole is a dancing machine. God only knows where he gets it from. We have Fios at home for cable/internet, and there are ~40 channels various types of music. This weekend, the pole was busting a jam to the Latina Rock station, the sounds of the season station, and his favorite, the opening song to "Clifford the Big Red Dog".

Tadpole News

A few quick stories:

The pole has learned to say "uh-oh" while holding his hands in the air. This would be great it he actually said it after he made a mistake. Instead, Steve has renamed it the "Uh-oh Alarm". The pole will put his hands in the air and say "uh-oh" before he does something naughty (ie throw a toy, climb on a box, etc).

We have been working with the pole daily on his picture/word cards. Last night as we were going through the words and pictures, he correctly did "arms up" by throwing his little arms in the air when we did the card. Sounds goofy, but we were pretty excited.

Strong Man Training: The pole has been running around the house with whichever toy interests him at the time and pausing every 10 seconds or so to perform a strong man squat. He will hold the toy out in front of him, and perform a very slow, deep squat, before standing up and running off again. The little monkey has thighs of steel.

Basketball: The pole received a basketball hop for Christmas and is able to repeatedly make baskets. He also "passes" to himself by throwing the ball across the room, running over to get it, and running back to the hoop to throw it in.
